Some hardy souls braved the gloom of an October day in Acre to ‘Beat the Bounds’ in a guided walk along the historic village boundaries as part of the Interpreting Acre project (organised by The Friends of Acre Village). The walk was led by volunteers from The Friends of Valley of Stone who explained the history of the settlement and how it had changed over the years.

It was a great walk – many thanks to everyone who took part.

Proffitts have really enjoyed working with the Friends of Acre on the interpreting Acre project over the past year. We had no idea there was such an interesting history to the village and that it was built by a woman. Innovative especially in the 19th century. The fact that the village boundaries can be traced and the village is relatively intact makes it so rare these days giving a glimpse into the past. The group are very nearly ready to release their village boundary walk as well as their interpretation board which will be erected in Worsley Park. Watch this space!…The photos represent Martin actually getting away from his desk helping the group decipher the route for the trail and Rachael considering eating all the pies 🙂

We have just been notified of the following information from Highways England regrading the upcoming improvement works in Acre.

A56 Rising Bridge Roundabout Improvement Scheme 

 Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald is responsible for managing and maintaining the motorway and trunk road network in Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and South Lancashire on behalf of Highways England.

We are shortly due to start improvement works on the A56 Rising Bridge Roundabout. This will include installation of traffic signals, controlled pedestrian crossing facilities, installation of lighting columns in the area and improvements to the cycle route.

Works will take place in a number of phases. This will be carried out between the hours of 22:00 and 05:00, 7 days a week. We anticipate for the works to commence on or shortly after 29 February 2016 and will take approximately 4 months to complete.

Subject to the type of work being undertaken, the works will either require overnight road closures or lane closures and a 50mph speed throughout the 4 month duration.

Haslingden Library was the venue for ‘Introductory skills in local or family history research’ and delivered by LCC Community Heritage Team. The evening was very informative, exploring the different resources available at our local libraries for heritage research. The group examined old and new Maps, books and learned about online resources and LCC digital library and archives that are free to use at libraries in Lancashire or online at home.

Following on from the very well attended ‘Memories of Acre Tea Party’ in January, the Friends of Acre hosted a walk, ‘Rossendale Railway Ramble’, along the old railway lines. It was a wet but informative day, starting and ending at the Textile Museum, Helmshore and lead by Lancashire County Council’s Community Heritage team.

Great news! The Friends of Acre Village have successfully raised almost £10,000 from a Shared Heritage grant from Heritage Lottery Fund.

Proffitts will be working alongside the group to help consult, learn and deliver a wide range of projects relating to the varied and interesting history of Acre Village. The project will include creation of a heritage walking trail around the village; recording video and oral history archive and creating a photo and memorabilia archive.

The Friends of Acre Village formed to save and preserve the identity of their village which was being swallowed up into neighbouring Haslingden and Rising Bridge. They secured Acre as a recognised postal address and are now keen to continue their good work.

The group are working with Proffitts, Lancashire County Council and Rossendale Borough Council with the aim of obtaining funding to preserve, restore and interpret the history of this interesting Victorian Village.
