Last week, Water Primary School held their 2022 Sports Day at the improved outdoor recreation space in Water. It’s wonderful to see the field being used by the school and community for such great events already ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks again to everyone who made this project possible – local donors, Water Primary School, Rossendale Borough Council and Lancashire Environment Fund!

Great to see the finishing touches added to the outdoor space in Water. The children from Water Primary School have already shown us that they’re excellent at planting, and now they’ve shown us their art and design skills too! Although the grass area should be kept free of dogs, the local pups and dog walkers can enjoy walking along the new footpath around the site, and spectate and cheer along the footballers, sports teams and community groups too – it’s a great outdoor facility for everyone!

The team from Lee Ashworth Excavations will continue to maintain and nurture the site in the immediate future, and we’d like to say a huge Thank You to Lee and John for supporting the project and working so hard to make the changes.

We’d also like to thank Water Primary School, Rossendale Borough Council, Lancashire Environment Fund for supporting and funding the works for the community ๐Ÿ™‚

On Friday, we spent time on site with children from Water Primary School. They mastered dibbers and trowels in no time and planted hundreds of bulbs and some extra trees too. Their hard work means that the site will have lots of extra colour by the Spring. The group not only planted like professionals, but they were full of questions and chatter and made the session really enjoyable. The staff and children were up to the challenge and a delight to work with โ€“ thank you, year 5!

Big thanks to Lee and John from Lee Ashworth Excavations too – they’ve been hard at work completing the big jobs on site, but took time to help the children with the planting as well. Top team.

Our last visitor was Councillor Julie Adshead from Rossendale Borough Council – thanks to Julie and everyone at RBC for their support.

Thanks to very generous local donations and funding from Lancashire Environment Fund, the work on site has started. We can’t wait to see the difference the new pathways, access, drainage, boundary changes and seating areas will make. Everyone locally will be able to use the space so much more – for games, sports, walks etc, and, by the time the work has finished, the local community and local organisations will have a great facility for event days and outdoor activities!

One of the local residents shared this fantastic picture with us today – a picture of Water Football Club League Champion Winners & Winners of Shield, 1908-1909. Hopefully, we can get even more budding sports fans enjoying the playing fields in Water again soon!

It’s been a while, but we’ve been busy since our last update and weโ€™re delighted to announce that Water Village Trust, in partnership with Proffitts โ€“ Investing in Communities and Rossendale Borough Council, have been successful in securing the funding required to improve the small playing fields in Water off Dean Lane.

The improvements planned are simple, but will have a big impact on the site. Changes include:

  • Creating a new path around the site to give better access for all and also to create a small area for people to watch their children play. This path will have a low fence to encourage people to walk around outside of playing area so dogs can’t foul the pitch area and prevent play from taking place.
  • Improving drainage around the main grassed playing area. The area will also be levelled and seeded for a better-quality surface which will be great for the school children to use on sports day.
  • Boundary improvements will be made where necessary to help keep the site safe during use.
  • Installing some seats and picnic tables around the site so that families and the community can visit, stay and make the most of being outdoors.

You can see a plan of the intended improvements below:

The project is aiming to be on site from May 2021 and is expected to be completed in full by June 2021 which is great timing for Summer. We’ll update you again when work is underway!

I think this is a wonderful idea

It would benefit the school and local people a lot

This will benefit the community hugely

It would be an asset for all villagers, I feel it would be well used

Will encourage more activity among young and old

This would be fantastic for the children

Great idea and a fantastic use of the space

As you know, we’re working alongside Water Village Trust, Water Primary School and Rossendale Borough Council on a project to improve and upgrade Water Recreation Ground for the benefit of the whole community of Water.
The aim is that this pitch area will be surfaced with an all weather surface material allowing it to be used all year round for games, Sports Days and general recreation. As part of the project, we would like to find out what the community think about these suggestions. We would be grateful if you could look at the plan below and answer the questions on this linkย Water Recreation Ground survey.
The deadline for the completion of the survey isย 22nd March, 2019.ย Thank you for your help!

We are delighted to be kick starting this project working alongside Rossendale Borough Council, Water Village Trust and Water Primary School. The purpose of the project is to increase opportunity for leisure, sport and recreational activities for all members of the local community. The existing site which the school has used previously used for sports days and after school clubs or holiday clubs is no longer usable for children and the general public. The completed project (whatever that may be) would enable further opportunity for children and local residents to improve their physical health and well-being. Through initial consultations, a multipurpose sports pitch / facility could be central to the vision of the steering group. Further consultation is needed so watch this space and your letter box if you live or work in Water. Please leave a comment below in the meantime.
