STACKSTEADS COMMUNITY PLANTS TREES FOR THE FUTURE

As part of the £90,000 scheme to make improvements to the Riverside Park, Stacksteads, the School Council from Holy Trinity School and local residents planted over 450 Jubilee Trees from The Woodland Trust.

The trees – elder, crab apple, blackthorn and hazel are just whips (small trees) as planted now but in a few years they will start to mature and bear fruit.  A ‘Jubliee Royal Oak’ was also planted – grown in one of the Royal Estates.

“We thought we were being ambitious when the 450 trees arrived from the Woodland Trust!” says group spokes person Jackie Oakes, “but the weather was kind, SCPG members and local residents came together to make sure we got them all planted – in record time!  Everybody enjoyed it, it was great to get out in the fresh air, get some exercise and be part of this wonderful project.”

The community tree planting event is just a small part of the improvements that are happening at Stacksteads Riverside Park.  Landscape Engineering is currently at work installing a new dual path route through the Riverside Park.  There will also be additional seating, planting, new signage and interpretation boards which will detail circular routes in and around the park.

Local residents should look out for further opportunities to get involved which will be advertised locally.  Specifically when the improvements are complete, there will be a number of activities designed to get families, young people and older people out and about in their local Riverside Park.

Proffitts – Investing in Communities worked in partnership with Stacksteads Countryside Park Group, Rossendale Borough Council and Lancashire County Council to secure £90,000 from the Big Lottery Fund’s Community Spaces programme and from Lancashire Environmental Fund.  Proffitts provided support to SCPG to consult local communities, provided a landscape design service to bring ideas to life and helped the group successfully apply for funds.
