A job well done, and in time for Christmas! Thanks so much to Groundwork Landscapes Ltd for working so hard to get the path work done. Planting will take place in the new year because it’s too frozen to do it now, but walkways are open and useable once again!

It’s freezing cold, but the team from Groundwork Landscapes are making great progress along the East Lancashire Railway path.
We need to say a huge ‘thank you’ to both the Civic Pride team for their advice and guidance on the project, and also the team at the Aldi store at New Hall Hey for supporting and accommodating the contractors during the works 🙂
If the snow stays away, we’re hoping that the path will be open for visitors again soon.

One step closer to the East Lancashire Railway path being accessible for everyone! Just a reminder that the path is closed while the improvement works are being done, and we’re sorry for the inconvenience this may cause – but we’re sure you’ll be much happier with the site once it reopens 🙂

The rain continues, but so does the work to improve the footpath along the East Lancashire Railway in Rawtenstall. The team are hoping for better weather next week, but the paths are coming along nicely!

Works to improve and extended the popular footpath along the East Lancashire Railway between the Railway Station at Rawtenstall, and the car park at the Aldi store at New Hall Hey are due to start next week.
Planned works include widening damaged sections of path, formalising and upgrading path surfaces, cutting back overhanging vegetation to give clear site lines, and tackling dead, diseased and damaged trees. The kneerail along the pathway will also be extended, and fencing repaired where needed. Once the works are completed, more woodland shrubs and bulbs will be planed in the wooded area.
Please note that the path will be closed whilst the works are carried out for public safety and warning barriers and fencing will be installed at each end of the path to prevent access. We’re sorry for the inconvenience this causes to users, but we’re sure that visitors will be much happier with the route once the works have been completed.
Works are expected to last around 6-8 weeks, weather permitting – but we’ll keep you updated here.

Local contractors have now been invited to tender for the delivery of the work needed. If all goes well, work on site should start in a few months time. We’ll keep you posted about progress and next steps as soon as we have more news.

Proffitts are partnering with Rossendale Borough Council on a project to upgrade the surface of the path running alongside the railway line between the railway station and Aldi. The path at Aldi has been widened and surfaced to give good access for all but as the path nears the railway line, the surface is rutted, uneven and overgrown in places. The volunteers at East Lancashire Railway and Civic Pride Rawtenstall will also be advising as we move forward.
The project will create a fully accessible path for all. It will also include an element of native woodland understorey planting of shrubs, wildflowers and bulbs to improve the biodiversity along this green corridor.
