Another week, and more progress at Game Street and Holgate Street🌳🚲🛹!

The improvements around Great Harwood continue! In addition to the pump track installation at Game Street, you’ll also notice fresh planting taking place at the base of the Towngate Clock and benches being refurbished at Towngate Square throughout June. In July, a team will also be busy at Holgate Street Car Park clearing the existing flower beds and replacing them with a new planting scheme featuring flowering herbaceous perennials and bulbs.
Two local artists are also busy creating new interpretation panels for the town, and the new mural at Game Street too – so a lot to look forward too!

Local artists, Amy Callaghan is still busy working on a design for the new town mural. Most recently, she’s been working alongside locals from the Great Harwood Art Group to get more insight into living in Great Harwood, and get some inspiration for the final design. They’ve been an amazing, and very talented, group to work with!
Look out for this artwork appearing in a pop up art exhibition taking place in the shop windows on Queen Street soon🎨🖌️👏

Please note that the car park off Church Street will be closed for a few weeks from June 16th. This is to allow the contractors to work on site. Apologies for any inconvenience, but when the site reopens you’ll see that the space has been extended and the surface has been repaired 👷♂️🚚.

Amazing local artist Cath Ford has been working with children from years 3 and 4 at Great Harwood Primary School to create designs for some new signage that will be installed in town.
Cath introduced the children to artists who use collage in their work and, inspired by this, they created their own handmade collage papers. Cath then took their work back to the studio with her. It will be scanned and form a palette of colours and patterns for her illustrations. The students will also make their own artwork inspired by the artists they have been studying. Here’s a peek at some of their ideas… 🎨🖌️⭐

Amazing progress already at Game Street! 👷♂️

It has been confirmed that a new pump track will be created at the Game Street multi use games area!
The cycling track will give people somewhere fun and safe to learn bike handling skills and confidence, boost their fitness, and spend time with friends.
The track has been designed by the amazing team at Clark and Kent – the organisation responsible for creating the BMX Supercross Track for the London Olympics in 2012 – and it will be accessible to riders of all ages and skill levels, making it a fun activity for everyone.
Work on the track will start in June, and should be completed by July, weather permitting.

Improvements at the St. Hubert’s Street site are almost complete! There’s some final seeding to be done, and everything could do with a little watering – but the team are almost finished ☀️🌳🐝

As part of this project, local artist Cath Ford has spent some time at Great Harwood Primary School. She worked with children from years 3 and 4, and together they created collage papers which will be used as part of the interpretation board designs in Great Harwood. The children did an amazing job!

Contractors from Wade Group have started improvements at the first of the five sites – St. Hubert’s Street.
Here’s a reminder of what work is taking place…new signage, tree works, path upgrades and bulb and tree planting 🌳🌼👷♂️

Thank you to everyone who joined Amy at the Library yesterday! It was lovely for so many of you to come along and join the art session and share your ideas for the artwork that will be created. I’m not sure if trees with chocolate on (as suggested by Aubie, age 5) will exist in Great Harwood in the future, but you never know!
Here’s some pictures of the gorgeous pencil cases that some of our contributors created while they were at the session. A very talented group! ⭐

Local artists, Amy Callaghan, has been very busy working with the community and St. Wulstan’s Primary School on workshops that will generate ideas, sketches, notes, and mood boards for the large mural to be created at the Game Street Car Park site. The children shared ideas about what they’d like to see in Great Harwood 100 years from now (ideas included aliens👽, flying cars 🚗, and more trees and plants 🌳). They also found out more about John Mercer and his contribution to the local cotton and dye trade, and even tried some textile painting techniques too.
The group were amazing at sharing their favourite themes and artwork to help guide the design – thank you!
If you’d like to get involved, then there’s still time. Amy will be running a pop up workshop at Great Harwood Library on Saturday 26th April, 10 – 12. If you join the session and share your ideas about the mural design, you’ll even get the opportunity to create your own printed pencil case to take home with you too 🎨😊

Draft masterplans for the sites in Great Harwood Town Centre are now available to view.
However, before the plans for the spaces are completed, we’d like to find out if local people have any ideas and suggestions to share with us about the project. You can do this by completing this very short survey: Great Harwood Town Centre Improvements Survey

We’re delighted to be working alongside Hyndburn Borough Council on a project aimed at improving some town centre sites including Bank Mill House Car Park, Game Street Car Park, Holgate Street Car Park, St. Hubert’s Street Gateway and Town Hall Square.
