Anyone passing through Market Place recently may have noticed that the Ramsbottom Heritage Society sign has been removed. But don’t worry – it hasn’t gone for good!
The original sign will be retained by the group, and a new Ramsbottom Heritage Society sign is being prepared and will take its place at the site in the next few weeks.
We know the sign is an important and familiar feature for the Heritage Society and local residents, so we wanted to reassure everyone that a replacement will be back in place very soon 🌳

We’re pleased to share that improvement works at the Market Place site in Ramsbottom will begin this week! 🌳
Work is due to start on Thursday 17th September. This will include work to the walls, repainting the railings, securing loose bollards, clearing drainage and improvements around the small stone feature known locally as the “castle”. Please note that upgrades to the main are surfacing and the Urn will not be completed at this time.
This first phase of work is expected to continue until mid-October 2026.
The next stage will focus on planting and landscaping, bringing more colour, greenery and seasonal interest. This work is scheduled to take place during December 2026 and January 2027. These improvements will complement the planting already cared for by Ramsbottom Civic Pride.
We’re really pleased to see the project moving forward and would like to thank local residents, businesses and visitors for their patience while the work takes place.

Improvement works at the Market Place site are expected to begin towards the end of September, as part of Bury Council’s work to create greener and more attractive spaces in and around Ramsbottom.
The first phase will include repairs to walls and paving, repainting the railings, securing loose bollards and clearing drainage. Work will also take place around the small stone feature known locally as the “castle”, where a new raised planting bed will be created and the existing datestone and interpretation will be made easier to see. The central urn sculpture and its immediate setting will remain as they are and will not be upgraded at this time.
Later in the year and into early 2027, attention will turn to the planting beds, with a colourful mix of perennials, grasses and bulbs helping to bring more colour and interest to the space throughout the year.
The new planting has been planned to work alongside the planting already cared for by Ramsbottom Civic Pride, recognising the time and care that local volunteers already give to the space.
We’re looking forward to seeing the work get underway and supporting Bury Council and Ramsbottom Civic Pride as the plans take shape. We’ll share more updates as the work progresses! 🌼

Today is the final day to share your views on plans to improve the green space between Factory Street and Ramsbottom Lane.
Ramsbottom Civic Pride, working with Bury Council and supported by Proffitts, is exploring ways to make this important gateway into the town centre brighter, greener and more welcoming for local people and wildlife.
Ideas include colourful planting, spring bulbs and wildflowers, improvements to paths and steps, management of existing trees and vegetation, repairs to walling, and new habitats for birds and insects.
If you know or use the area, there’s still time to tell us what you think. The short survey only takes a few minutes, and your feedback will help shape the plans for the space.

The Ramsbottom Greening Project is continuing, with Ramsbottom Civic Pride now looking at another important gateway into the town centre – the green space between Factory Street and Ramsbottom Lane.
They’re a volunteer-led group committed to making Ramsbottom an even better place to live, work and visit. Their Facebook group has grown to 885 members, providing an important way for the group to share information with local people, hear their views and help shape where their voluntary time and efforts can make the greatest difference.
Together with Bury Council, and with support from Proffitts, they’re exploring how the Factory Street/Ramsbottom Lane area could be made brighter, greener and more welcoming, while improving access and creating more opportunities for wildlife.
Ideas being considered include managing some of the existing trees and overgrown vegetation, introducing more colourful planting, spring bulbs and wildflowers, improving paths and steps, repairing sections of existing walling and creating new habitats for birds and insects.

The project focuses on proposals to improve two key gateway sites in Ramsbottom: Market Place and Bridge Street Gardens. We’re delighted to be working alongside Bury Council on their plans to improve several key gateway sites in Ramsbottom. The project is supported by Bury Council with funding from the Government’s Local Growth and Place Flexible Grants Programme. The sites include the area around the Urn (The Tilted Vase) Irwell Valley water sculpture at Market Place and the Bridge Street Gardens site situated just of Bridge Street, adjacent to the East Lancs Railway signal box.
Proposals under consideration include updated planting and landscaping, improved access and entrances, and the introduction of new seating, signage and bins. Before plans for these spaces are finalised, the team would like to find out if local residents have any ideas that they would like to share about the project. You will be able to do this by completing a very short survey.
