The Friends of Fallbarn have worked to determine the needs of local people.
Consultation included an estate wide questionnaire, consultation with Balladen Primary School and an event at the local youth club. The main priorities were replacing the springy (as it is highly missed) some seating and adding colour to the area through bulb planting.
The new facility will encourage and promote physical activity and provide the young families with something to do and a safe place to use.
There are no other play areas on the housing estate known as Hall Carr. The nearest play area is Whitaker Park and although this is a large destination park, this is over a mile away on the other side of the valley. Getting to it involves 2 very steep hills; crossing a bypass (A682) and 2 busy main roads (Bury Road and Haslingden Road without crossing facilities) so it isn’t always an alternative option, especially for families without cars or with smaller children.
The project will improve the appearance of the site through the works and also make it more accessible and user friendly.
The delivery of the springy project will coincide with a bulb planting event involving the local school and youth club. The bulbs will be planted around the edges of the play area and junior play / pathway which , in the spring, will add lots of colour – it will look lovely! The children will walk down and receive a quick talk and demonstration and also discuss the benefits of planting bulbs ie colour, wildlife etc. Once planted, the children will walk back and be given a small paper bag of bulbs to plant at home with their parents and carers to help establish an interest in the environment and their own surroundings.
You now have the opportunity to vote for this project to win a share of funding from the Tesco Bags of Help campaign. All you have to do is make sure you receive a token from the cashier after you’ve done your shop. On the way out, you’ll see a large plastic voting box.
