Dipping Into The Past At Whittlefield
Residents of Crow Wood Court were joined by the local community to enjoy a local history afternoon on the 10th April. Exploring how the Whittlefield area has changed and transformed through the years provoked many a memory and the room was soon alive with the buzz of shared conversations. Mr Roger Frost, a prominent local historian, gave an interesting, humorous talk about the impact of the Leeds Liverpool canal in Burnley and this was enjoyed by all. Young people from the Stepping Stones organisation helped out providing a welcome cup of tea for all those who came.
The local history afternoon is part of a wider project and the first in a series of events to improve the canal corridor as it runs between Pendle Way and Gannow Tunnel. Funded through Lancashire Environmental Fund and the Big Lottery’s Awards for All fund the project aims to bring communities together as we make improvements to the canal.
Local schoolchildren from St Mary Magdalene RC Primary School have also been getting creative for the project. There were over 30 entries into the ‘Design the Entrance Sign’ competition and the standard of entries was very high. Marjorie Bolton, the Home Support Officer at Calico Homes’ Crow Wood Court, helped to organise the competition. “It was so very difficult to judge” Marjorie says, “the winner will be so thrilled when they see their sign made up and installed by the canal.”
Proffitts – Investing in Communities is working in partnership with Canal & Rivers Trust and the Stepping Stone organisation to improve the local canal area in Whittlefield. Working with young people from Stepping Stones we will be making fencing and hedging repairs as well as cutting back encroaching shrub, planting fruit trees, wildflowers, installing benches and new community designed artwork.
