Garstang River Wyre footpath – case study summary 2015

This afternoon, local people and avid walkers, including the Mayor and Mayoress of Wyre, joined us to celebrate a ceremonial ribbon cutting at the start of the improved, more accessible to all, footpath near Garstang Millennium Green (Wyre Lane entrance)
The Garstang Millennium Green Trust, along with Wyre Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and ourselves, have been working on the project for over three years. The improvements, which include improved access, levels, signage and interpretation, boundaries and seating, were completed earlier this year by East Lancashire company Marchbridge Builders Ltd .
The group raised £60,000 for the project through Wyre Borough, Lancashire County Council and from the Lancashire Environment Fund. The group also sought donations of materials from local residents to provide finishing touches, including bird boxes, at the site.
Ron Freeland, Group member said, “We are delighted that the work is complete, and the footpath is open once again. It has been a long process to get to this point, but the end result is worth it! I’m sure everyone who will use the path and the surrounding area will agree! We’d like to thank everyone who was involved and I’m looking forward to seeing it put into good use. I’m hoping just a simple improvement like this will help attract more people to visit Garstang and the surrounding areas.”
Rachael Gildert from Proffitt’s said ”It has been a great project to work on. The Group have been so committed to the project right from the start and it now shows! Thank you to the funders for enabling the improvements to take place in the first place”.
Elements of the project were only delivered through the dedication of groups of voluntary work applying the finishing touches which makes the scheme stand out. A big thank you goes out to the Millennium Green and Wyre volunteers for some of the path and access work and again, without the input of the Garstang Community Academy, the bird and bats would be homeless!

The footpath has been edged and surfaced along the full length from Broom Hill to Lingart Lane. The contractors are busy repairing and installing new stock fencing and gates and will begin work on the new timber ramp in the next week or two

Nice tidy work up nr Garstang Millennium Green. Good progress being made by Marchbridge Contractors. Thanks again for the support from Wyre Council and Lancashire Environmental Fund.
Work started on site to surface FP34 along the River Wyre during the first week in November and is now well underway. Over half of the total length of footpath has already been resurfaced and new revetments have been built to help hold the path in place during flooding and high river levels. The contractors (Marchbridge Ltd) have been working hard in all weathers to get this work done as quickly as possible.
If weather continues to stay relatively dry, it is hoped that the majority of works will be completed before Christmas. Interpretation and signage is likely to be completed in the New Year

The project is about to start! Thanks to the support of the local community and Garstang Millennium Green Trust, funds from Wyre Borough Council and Lancashire Environmental Fund and especially assistance from Lancashire County Council, the winning contractor, Marchbridge Builders Ltd, will start on site in the next 2 weeks. Martin, from Proffitts, said “Thanks to everyone for your patience – we got there! The project will be a fantastic little route for easy access into the countryside. There are some good existing links to the Millennium Green and further potential to still look at.’ Please click on the plan to remind yourself of the improvements.

All the relevent consents are almost in place and we are getting ready to start the tendering process. We hope work will begin on site in late Summer and be completed in Autumn of this year!

Garstang, Wyre
The aim of this project is to upgrade and provide a safe, interesting, accessible footpath link to the already very popular, established footpaths alongside the River Wyre, Grizedale Brook. Those that are less abled have approached the community group and encouraged us to look at ways of opening up access to the countryside further. We are proposing the following improvements: new signage, better surface for the path and ramp access. The fulfillment of this project will ensure that all the community will have the link to nature and green space. Local community development is key and will be wholly encouraged throughout the process. All funding is now secured – thank you!! £20,000 from Wyre Borough Council and £29,945 from Lancashire Environmental Fund. The project due is to start in the Summer. In the meantime, we are all busy with the prep work!
